Attending Shadow

“Is it time yet?” said the dragon.

“Patience Asmodeus, must you always be in a hurry?” replied the cloaked figure.

The companions were brought to a small cottage in the forest miles from any village. “It is a shame she won’t get to see her grow, but like so many before, they have their watchers to protect them,” remarked Asmodeus.

“Yes, the watchers will guide her. This affair is none of our concern. I hate it when you get emotional, and I thank you for keeping your thoughts to yourself,” snapped the figure.

“As you wish. The sand is almost gone. Shall we go now?” asked the dragon.

“Give them a bit more time, as you wisely said she will never see her again,” the cloaked one said.

“Hmm, that almost sounds like compassion; you better watch that, or you’ll start rumors,” chided Asmodeus.

“No need to be impertinent. I was merely pointing out the facts,” replied the figure.

Rushing feet emanated from the house, followed by painful cries. “It is time we go,” the figure commanded.

“Such a shame,” said the little beast.

As the figures moved silently through the walls, they reached the bedside of their appointment and stood momentarily. “You know who I am,” the figure asked.

The woman nodded and then rose from her bed, holding the figure’s hand. “You may wish to take a last look at your child,” Asmodeus said.

The woman turned her head and gazed with pride. “The watchers will look after her; she will be a fine young lady soon enough,” remarked the dragon.

“Time we were off. There are others to collect before returning to Avalon this night,” said the figure.

“Are you Death?” asked the woman.

“Some call me that. Asmodeus prefers Azrael. Either works for me,” answered the cloaked figure.

The party passed through the walls and into the night sky on their way to the sunless lands and a hot cup of tea.
