Nubert sat on the bench in the afternoon and waited for a friend.
He was past middle age, and in all those years of trying to find that special someone, he had never even come close to conversing over tea.
His grandma once told him she met her husband while she sat on a bench and waited for a friend. As hope faded, Nubert followed his grandmother and sat on the bench, waiting for a friend.
No one came by the first week, and the second was not much better. Three weeks on, and things looked no better. “Perhaps I’m not meant to find someone. Perhaps I am meant to be alone,” Nubert mumbled.
“Excuse me, but is someone sitting in that spot?” asked an elegantly dressed lady.
“No, please, by all means, have a seat and rest,” replied Nubert.
“That is very kind of you; I’m Norena, and whom do I have the pleasure of addressing,” asked the lady.
“Nu Nu Nubert,” studdered the man.
“I’m waiting for a friend, and it seems he is running late today,” offered Norena as a way to break the ice.
“What a coincidence, so am I,” said Nubert.
The two sat and had a polite conversation while they waited. After a bit, Norena began to look agitated, constantly gazing at her watch.
“Is there something wrong? I notice you check your watch every few moments,” asked Nubert.
“Well, it seems my friend has decided to skip our appointment today,” Said Norena.
“Yes, mine too. How odd; perhaps you care to join me for tea and biscuits at the café?” asked Nubert.
“What a capital idea. Why waste a perfectly marvelous day,” replied Norena.
“Shall we be off,” said Nubert as he and Norena walked and talked their way to the café for what was to be one of many fabulous meetings for tea and biscuits.
Years later, Nuber remembered how his grandmother met her husband and wondered if it was anything like how he met his special someone while sitting on a bench waiting for a friend.
