“Wake up!” yelled Trifle at her sleeping brother. The boy rolled out of bed and pulled on his poncho.
“I’m up already, geez, what’s the big rush? It’s not like the flowers will walk away or anything,” remarked Tillard.
“No, but the butterflies will,” responded his sister.
“Walk away? Don’t they have wings?” chided her brother.
“You know what I meant. Let’s go, now!” commanded the girl.
When the sunflowers and daisies of Mysty Meadow bloom in unison, they turn the air above into a ballet of colors.
Grabbing bread and cheese, the two rushed through the kitchen and out the back door of their home.
“Have fun, you two,” their mother called. She then added, “Be home for lunch,” as if it would do any good to remind them.
“We’ll take the shortcut to the meadow. The trail will be slippery. If we take it slow, we can reach the meadow before the mist burns off,” said Tillard.
They walked through the undergrowth, sliding past briars and hopping over fallen tree trunks. “The air is so clean. It’s almost as if it rained,” said Trifle.
“Yes, the morning mist clears the air. That’s what Nana told me as we picked mushrooms last year,” her brother replied.
The path cleared, allowing the children to run up the steep hill. “We’re almost there. I can see the treeline ahead,” said Tillard.
The two burst out of the forest and stood awestruck at the view. “I have never seen so many butterflies in all my life,” said Trifle.
“Me neither,” mumbled her brother.
The landscape was an enormous ballet with swirling dancers of every shape and color.
The siblings stood frozen in wonderment as they watched the swarm move across the meadow. By mid-morning, only a few stragglers remained.
“When do you think we can see them again?” asked Trifle.
“Nana says only the fairies know. Besides, if it happened yearly, it wouldn’t be special,” her brother answered.
“True, but I wouldn’t mind,” replied Trifle.
“Me neither,” said Tillard.
Taking his sister’s arm, Tillard guided Trifle back into the woods and down the path to a much-anticipated lunch.
