“Hello, my friend. I’m glad you have made your way down here. I don’t often get visitors,” said the strange little man.
You laughed when you heard the tales of ancient bones that heal in Russia. Your willingness to believe changed as the disease spread unchecked throughout your body.
“My name is Muzhichik. I am the bone’s guardian. Please do not entertain any thoughts of stealing them. My friend Trogi will make sure you do not live if you try,” said the monk.
You tell the monk that you are dying and offer to buy a piece of bone to help heal you.
“Many have come here to buy, but for some, the price is too high,” said the Muzhichik.
Explaining again that you have brought gold and will pay what he asks.
“No, my friend, gold is not enough,” answers the man.
You stand thinking over his words, then cautiously ask him what else he requires.
“Your immortal soul,” replies the monk.
The words hit you like a mountain of rock. You ask how he can ask this when the soul belongs to God, his master.
“Ha, ha, who told you I work for him? I serve a greater master whose kingdom was taken by the one whose bones you seek,” explains Muzhichik.
Realizing you should have allowed nature to take its course. “You must sign in blood, and then I will give you the bone,” says the monk.
You nod and extend your hand. The monk draws the blade across your palm and hands you the pen.
“Dip it into the blood and sign here,” said the monk, pointing at the scroll.
You finish your signature and await the bone.
“Trogi will get the relic for you. Your gold, please,” asks the man.
The grayish figure moves to the catacomb’s wall and reaches in. The crunch of bone echoes throughout the crypt as Trogi twists the saint’s remains.
Muzhichik hands you the bone wrapped in paper.
“We will see each other someday, until then. Dasvidaniya,” the monk said with a wry smile.
Raising his hand to wave goodbye, you spot the long scar across his palm and understand. The monk also purchased Saint Vlasic’s bones for the price of his soul.
