“Double, double, toil and trouble; fire burn, and cauldron bubble. Fillet of fenny snake in the cauldron boil and bake; eye of newt, and toe of frog. Wool of bat, and tongue of dog, adder’s fork, and blind worm’s sting. Lizard’s leg and owlet’s wing – for a charm of powerful trouble, like a hell-broth, boil and bubble. Double, double, toil and trouble; fire burn, and cauldron bubble.”
William Shakespeare, Macbeth
“By the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes,” said Matilda, gazing across the land.
“What the humans do not know will kill them,” remarked Ophelia.
“No matter where you go, there you are,” said Trillium.
“We three are here as prophecy proclaims to do the work of our master. What will it be first, plague, famine, flood?” asked the eldest.
“Oh, bother Matilda. You’re always stuck in the past. Let’s bring the firestorms of Armageddon,” replied Ophelia, the youngest.
“Let them do it themselves. A push here and a nudge there is all it would take. Their armies are itching for a fight,” suggested Trillium.
“True sister, of all the worlds we watch, this one dances on the edge of oblivion the most. It is a pity, too. Their art is the finest in the universe,” offered Ophelia.
“Be that as it may, we are here to do a job, and do a job we must,” snapped Matilda.
“What about letting them drown?” asked Trillium.
“Yes, an oldie but a goodie! Floods love ’em,” said Matilda.
“Not floods, sea rise, it’s malevolent how they heat the planet. It won’t take long. I want to see their faces after the blinders come off. The guilt will be splendid,” said Ophelia.
“Takes too long. Let’s put it to a vote, old school or new school,” commanded Matilda.
The three hemmed and hawed, finally deciding that one can go wrong with old school.
“Plague and famine it is!” squealed the eldest.
“Will they even notice the end coming?” asked Trillium.
“Nope, too busy checking likes. Master was brilliant when he inspired Mr. Jobs to make the multi-touch phone,” said Ophelia.
“Don’t forget Mark’s epiphany for a global town square to share and like was a Master’s, too,” remarked Matilda.
“Such a shame, but that’s how the cookie crumbles,” said the youngest.
“Such a shame indeed. Anyone up for tea and cakes?” asked Trillium as the three sisters faded from view.
