“Honestly, Cuthbert, I just can’t understand why I wake each morning standing before the main door, ” said Professor Giles.
Stanley Giles, a professor of archaeology, has had horrifying dreams since his return from the dark continent.
“I think it has something to do with the skull you brought back, professor,” replied his manservant.
“Why, Cuthbert, I wouldn’t take you for one who falls for Mombo Jumbo,” chided Giles.
“Well, sir, my cat’s been uneasy of late. Around the time you say you doze off, she runs around the place hissing,” said the man.
Ignoring the cat’s behavior, Giles said cats and the fairer sex were susceptible to emotional outbursts.
The next night, Cuthbert decided to stay up and see if something was afoot. The servant opened the door and followed the cat as it began to run and hiss.
“Great Scot, the professor’s skull is speaking,” cried Cuthbert.
“Home, I want to go home. You took me away. Now take me back home,” the skull moans. The manservant rushes over and removes the object from the professor’s hands, startling him awake.
“What is this?” a surprised Giles says before stopping abruptly when the skull’s moans grow louder.
“My God, the thing is alive,” cries the professor.
Giles examines the talking head and soon connects his night walking with the skull’s determination to return to its home.
“I fear you have upset the spirit and must make amends, or you’ll surely succumb to its power,” cautioned Cuthbert.
“Cuthbert, I’ve been an arrogant fool, and your cat tried to warn me. Tomorrow, I will return it posthaste to its home,” proclaimed Giles.
The following day, Giles and Cuthbert carefully packed the skull and delivered it to the shipping company. “Please spare no expense to return this object to its home,” said the professor.
Giles then wired his colleague in Africa with instructions for returning the skull to its resting place. “I hope it can give me peace now that it’s on its way home,” the professor remarked.
That night, Stanley Giles slept like a baby. In the morning, he sent Cuthbert to the market to buy a large herring. The professor presented it to Mrs. Butterworth, the cat, with humility and gratitude.
“I thank you, Mrs. Butterworth. You’ve shown me that it’s never too late to realize we don’t know it all,” the professor said.
