To guard the Elder Tree was the most tremendous honor any Evo could hope for. Today, Tegla was taking her place in the Hall of Heroes.
Born to a poor rural family, Trgla attends the academy and trains to become a centurion.
“Child, you bring honor to your family and village. Go be what you’ve always wanted to be: a guardian,” said her mother.
Luck allowed her to advance her status and become a centurion when the next in line fell off a cliff.
When she heard the news of her promotion, Evo remarked, “I will do this thing. I will make you proud of me.”
When she arrived at the Elder Tree, it was a cold, windy day, but this did not affect her excitement.
“I will make my family proud,” said the Evo, who stood guard as the day and night.
Ten years have passed, and the young girl has grown to become a fierce warrior. Soon, Tegla will retire and return to her village as a hero.
“I know they will honor me and treat me well. That life is not mine. I am a warrior and will die in combat, not tucked into a moth-eaten blanket,” said Tegla.
When the day arrived, the Evo saluted her replacement then walked off the mountain to a place no one could say.
Some say Tegla lives in the Far East serving the Empire of Cathay. Others say she moved north to raises rabbits and mules.
One can bet she is doing what she wants wherever she is, and no one can say otherwise.
