A Friendly Chat

“You know, Áengus, things have gotten out of hand,” said Owain. The leprechaun visited his old friend twice a month, rain or shine.

“I notice the people have turned away from the land lately,” Owain muttered.

The two were friends before the battle between witches and wizards.

“I miss our talks down by the sea. You were always scheming to get rich. Those were happy times they were,” said Owain.

When the war came to the leprechauns, they sided with the wizards and paid a heavy price. The witches defeated the wizards and then sought vengeance on the leprechauns.

“I thought about how you saved my life and took that spell full force. It was a kind thing to do, my friend,” said Owain.

Many suffered until the witches were stopped by the humans and their newly adopted faith.

“We always thought humans were dim-witted, yet they were the ones to save us. It was too late for you, my friend,” remarked Owain.

Since that time, the friends have been meeting. Owain tells his friend the latest gossip, and Áengus listens quietly.

“Time I be off. Until next time, stay well, and don’t let any crows come and give you a hard time. Remember, we leprechauns have our dignity to uphold,” said Owain with a wry smile.

Owain brushed off the dust that had collected on Áengus shoulder, then winked and said goodbye.

The leprechaun hoped that when it was his time, he and Áengus could stand side by side. They would wait quietly together for the return to the lands of the West.
