“I don’t see why you are so upset, Master Deedle,” said the Meowl.
“Isn’t this what you always dreamt about? You’re always telling us how much you want to get off this rock, and now you are,” remarked the Sragon.
Deedle had lived his entire life on Windhaven. Most of that time, he dreamed about leaving it.
“I guess I never thought it would come true, and now the thought of leaving the two of you doesn’t sit well,” said Deedle.
“We’re not going anywhere, and school has brakes, so we’ll see you soon enough,” said the Meowl.
“Thank you, Katja, for your encouragement. Being away from you and Niklas feels like a betrayal to you both,” the boy said.
“You are referring to the time we swore we would never leave each other,” said Niklas.
“Master Deedle, you will return and teach us about experiences we could never have,” said Katja.
“I will count the days until you bring us tales of the outside world. Then I’ll dream about them until you return with more,” the Sragon said.
“I guess I am giving all of us a chance to spread our wings and soar above the clouds to see beyond Windhaven,” Deedle said.
“No pun intended,” laughed the Meowl.
“When does the airship leave?” asked Niklas.
“In an hour. I have already packed so that I could spend my last moments with you,” the boy said.
“Let’s be off. I want to stop by the sweet shop and have you buy me some fizz-pops before you go,” said Katja.
The three friends head for the depot, where Deedle will begin a new chapter of his life. “Winter break will be magical indeed,” said Niklas.
“I’m sure it will,” said Deedle.
“You will bring us some treats, won’t you?” asked Katja.
“Turkish Delights and marzipan. I promise,” remarked the boy.
“We will miss you, so please take care and come home soon,” said his friends.
I swear,” said Deedle as he climbed into the airship and waved goodbye.
“I hope marzipan tastes yummy! ” the Meowl said to her companion as they flew home to wait for Winter break.
