“Archibald, do you think they’ll come for us?” asked Elestra.
The dragon pretended to be asleep to avoid another worrisome conversation.
“I don’t understand why they have to hunt you? It’s not like you attacked a castle and kidnapped the princess,” remarked Elestra.
Opening one eye, the dragon gazed at the girl, then spoke.
“True, the dragon did not attack the castle and kidnap the princess. Rather, the princess tricked the dragon into eloping with her,” grumbled Archibald.
“You did say you understood my situation and would help anyway you could,” replied the princess.
The two argued back and forth about who said what. “The die is cast, and until I get you to Merlin’s stronghold, we are both in danger,” said the dragon.
“Did I ever tell you how boring it is to be a princess?” asked Elestra.
“You might have mentioned it once or twice,” said Archibald.
“I will ask Merlin to grant you a pardon,” said the girl. “Then we can return triumphantly to my father’s castle.”
“That is very thoughtful of you. I’m pretty sure your father would still have me skewered the moment we landed,” remarked the dragon.
“He’s such an old fussbudget about me marrying the right prince. He never even asked me what I wanted,” said Elestra.
“Fathers don’t usually consider dragons suitable candidates for future sons-in-law,” said Archibald.
“Still, when I told him of my intention to marry you, he should have had a sit down with Mummy and you,” replied the princess.
“I’m sure he worried I couldn’t fit in the great hall. Wanting to avoid broken furniture and crushed servants,” said the dragon.
“Yes, I’m sure you’re correct,” said Elestra.
“There will be time enough to chit chat at Merlin’s in the morning,” said Archibald. “Now let’s get some sleep so we can be bright-eyed and bushy-tailed for the grand wizard.”
“Of course, you’re correct as always. I hope Merlin likes me. I would hate to think we’ve traveled all this way just to put him out,” said the girl.
“I’m sure he will fancy you just fine. There is one thing I know about Merlin. He loves having young ladies in his company,” said Archibald with a wry smile.
In the morning, they rose at dawn and then made their way to Merlin’s stronghold. “Greetings, children, my home is yours. Please make yourselves comfortable,” said Merlin.
So they did-and lived happily ever after.
