Twisted Tales to Delight and Amaze

Taking Things Easy

Taking Things Easy

“A twist to the left, then a twist to the right, and it’s open,” said Tawny McGill.

Tawny took things easy, a little too easy for the local constable’s liking. Those duffers have no appreciation for my talents,” Tawny would often say.

“I am getting too old for this kind of work. I’ll retire and become a proper businessman,” Tawny told his mate over a pint.

“Yeah, you make a great banker, you already know how to rob folks of their life savings,” chided his friend.

One stormy night, Tawny was out making his rounds when he saw something that made his blood run cold.

“Oh, Jesus in heaven, that thing is a werewolf, and it killed old Tom,” muttered the thief.

The beast heard his voice and spun around. Tawny vanished behind a wall and waited until the coast was clear.

“I need to get out of here. Can’t go home in case the beast follows,” said Tawny.

Waiting for the sun ensured the beast’s transformation back to human form. “Best to stay near the wharf in case that monster comes back,” said Tawny.

While walking home, Tawny caught a glimpse of Mr. Privey. The banker was staggering up his steps and into his house.

“Someone tied on a good one last night,” said the thief. Then Tawny noticed the blood on the steps and door frame.

Bloody Hell, Privey is the werewolf,” said Tawny.

Too excited to sleep, the thief formulated a plan. “I’ll get a silver bullet from Reverend Robbins, and next month follow that banker,” said Tawny.

As the full moon began its journey across the sky, Tawny was ready.

“I’ll stop that creature, and they’ll make me a hero,” said the thief.

Tawny waited until the banker started his transformation. Then he raised the rifle and shot the beast.

“I missed his heart,” said Tawny.

Mr. Privey cried out to let him live. “The silver bullet is stuck in my leg and will keep me from transforming,” cried the man.

Seeing that what the banker said was true, Tawny helped Mr. Privey home. In the morning, the thief removed the bullet and bound his wound.

“It seems we have a business arrangement to settle,” said Tawny to the banker. Tawny offered to keep Privey’s secret in exchange for a position at the bank.

“It seems I have no choice, and I need someone to cover for me each month,” said the banker.

Tawny McGill became the new assistant manager at Forbes and Privey Savings and Loan LLC.

“Tawny, I can’t believe you became an upstanding citizen,” said his friend over a pint.

“Things transformed into an opportunity too good to pass up,” said Tawny with a wry smile.

Tawny did more than cover for the werewolf. Tawny stopped Privey’s monthly killing by locking him in the bank’s vault until sunrise.

On the banker’s deathbed, he thanked Tawny for changing his life.

“It was an honor to serve you, Mr. Privey, and thank you for leaving me the bank. I’ll take good care of it,” said Tawny.

That’s what he did by cleaning out the vault and closing the bank the very next day.

Rumors say Tawny moved to America, bought a ranch out west, and is still living there today.
