Autumn Nears

“My goodness, what a wonderful smell. How I love Autumn’s fragrances,” remarked Anya.

This year would be her one hundredth Autumn. Thinking of all the village festivities made her as giddy as a schoolgirl.

“I can’t wait to tell Gojeck about tonight’s harvest moon,” said Anya. Anya’s husband was a miner who spent his nights working deep underground.

Gojeck did not share his wife’s enthusiasm for the seasons. “Woman, you’re daft about all this changing. Now in the mine, things are orderly. Nothing changes there,” Gojeck would tell her.

“Tomorrow, Gojeck must go to the orchard and gather the fruit for the jellies,” remarked Anya.

Putting food up for the winter was one of the things Anya loved about Autumn.

“I wonder if Malak will have any extra clove oil for the applebutter?” mumbled Anya as she made her way home.

An owl swooped low overhead, then circled back and landed near Anya. “Hello, Templar, good to see you out and about. Is the wife doing well?” asked the matron.

The owl replied with several hoots and then dropped an object beside Anya.

“What have we here? Why, it’s amber. Where on earth did you find it?” asked Anya.

The owl’s wing pointed toward the northern forest. “Thank you for this precious gift,” the matron said.

Templar nodded, then took flight and disappeared into the darkness.

“Time to head back. The morning waits for no one, and I’m no spring chick,” chuckled Anya.

After placing the amber on her nightstand, Anya prepared for bed.

“Autumn has so many gifts to give. I don’t want to miss a single one. Off to bed go I,” muttered Anya.

Autumn only comes once a year, and the villagers always make the most of it. Shouldn’t you, too?
