“Tamac, hurry up, I don’t want to miss seeing the rainbow falls,” said Alesi.
“Must we always be rushing everywhere, Mistress?” replied the tiny dragon.
Alesi had spent her entire life in the beloved forest of Ãlskad. She couldn’t imagine that the whole world was not an enormous forest.
“Do you see the waterfall’s spray making a rainbow?” the girl asked.
“Yes, Mistress. It’s the same as last time and the time before that,” replied Tamac.
“You don’t need to be grumpy about it. It’s the most beautiful thing in the entire world,” said Alesi.
The friends decided to visit the swinging seat. They wanted to relax while enjoying the midday buzz of insects.
“Will we roast jubjub nuts for dinner or catch a trout?” said the dragon.
“Food, is that all you ever think about? Look at all the marvelous things to see and learn about. Aren’t you even the slightest bit curious about them?” asked Alesi.
“Mistress, how many times must I remind you that I am two hundred and forty-six years older than you. Believe it or not, I have seen a thing or two,” replied Tamac.
The sunlight faded, leaving the forest bathed in early twilight. “Let’s head back now and see what your mother is up to,” said the dragon.
“Ok,” answered the girl. “I want to climb up the seeing tree. I also want to watch the setting sun if you don’t mind.”
“Suit yourself,” replied Tamac.
High above, Alesi could see trees extending to the horizon and wondered if she would ever leave Ãlskad.
“Tamac, do you ever think about leaving the forest and traveling afar, as many have?” asked the girl.
“I have read the tales of my ancestors. I am satisfied to know they found the outside cold and lonely. Ãlskad is my home and that is good enough for me,” said Tamac.
“I wish I could say my feelings were the same,” said Alesi.
“Time for dinner, and my tummy is grumbling for jubjub nuts,” said Tamac.
The friends made their way through the forest. They arrived as Alesi’s mother placed roasted nuts and chard timbo root on the serving table.
“Come and eat. The forest provides,” said the woman.
“But does it provide for a wandering heart?” the girl whispered.
Tomorrow offered another day of discovery and the possibility of resolving her heart’s dilemma. For now, food, friends, and family eased her worries.
