Twisted Tales to Delight and Amaze

A Seeker of Truth

“You come before me as a seeker of truth,” said the Siren.

“Aye, I have, and I’m prepared to pay the price for such knowledge,” replied the man.

Far from the highways is a place few would seek if they had a choice. It is an ancient place with an ancient inhabitant.

“State your case so the flames may weigh its truth,” the Siren said.

“The prophecy said that I would be the savior of my people. I am meant to drive out the dark ones from across the sea. Is this my truth?” the man asked.

The Siren lifted her hands to observe the dancing flames she held in each palm.

“It seems there is truth in what you say,” answered the ancient one.

“So the prophecy was correct. King Ambaxius,” mumbled the man as he turned to walk away.

“King? You asked nothing about this,” said the Siren.

Turning back, the man spoke out. “Once I drove out the invaders, the people would hail me king,” said Ambaxius.

“The flames find no truth in this,” said the Siren.

“I don’t understand,” remarked the man.

“The flames see truth in your victory. It appears you will perish having achieved your destiny,” said the Siren.

“I see, will the war but lose the battle,” muttered Ambaxius.

“There is a greater truth. Would you care to hear it?” asked the ancient one.

The man felt a wave of dread wash over him. “I came here as a seeker, and am prepared to hear the whole truth,” said the man.

“While your death may not be to your liking, it will serve to unite your lands. For the one who now has your back will drive the blade that kills you,” said the Siren.

“Betrayed by Talius. That would do it. Does he live?” remarked Ambaxius.

“For a time. Talius’s death, like yours, comes from behind,” the Siren said.

Ambaxius bowed. He then placed a loaf of bread, salt, and a bowl of cream before the Siren, the traditional payment for service.

“Your truth has set you free, live your days without care,” said the Siren.

“That is a gift few men enjoy. May time and the elements be kind to you,” Ambaxius said, then walked off into the night.

The Siren gathered the offering and then spoke. “Humans live their lives wrapped in lies. If only they opened their eyes to the truth, they would be happy even with a grain of salt.”
