“You have come again. Did you bring Obeah pretties?” said the demon.
“I have. This one is round and plump, just the way you like them. She was caught stealing candy, so she must pay the price,” I told the devil man.
“Candy stealer, you say? She will do for tonight. You must bring Obeah more pretties. He needs to eat. Otherwise, the long, cold winter will not spare Obeah,” spoke the creature.
“Show me my gold first, then you can have your pretty,” I said to the soulless beast.
“You want shinnies, yes? Obeah will get. First, I must taste the pretty to see her value,” Obeah said.
“You get nothing until I get my gold,” I said.
Obeah became irritated at not getting his demand. I soon calmed him. I told him I would leave without handing over the pretty.
No! You must not go. I will get you your shinies.” Obeah said and ran off into the swamp.
“Here is what you want. Now give her to me. She is so big and round. Yes, a full belly she has. Give now!” cried the creature.
I handed over the female and then took my gold.
“Bring more for Obeah,” said the beast as he sank his filthy teeth into her flesh.
The screams did not usually last long. “I’ll bring you more, but I must be careful,” I said as I walked back down the path. “The villages are beginning to suspect me.”
“I’ll have a pint and a pie tonight,” I told the barkeep and tossed him a lump of gold.
Not a bad night’s work for a rat catcher.
