JoJo loved his mother very much and wanted to get her a special gift for the Fifth of Po celebration.
“Father, what did you get Grand Mama for her silver celebration?” asked JoJo.
“Let me think. Ground pods from the upper valley,” answered his father.
“I want to get Mother something special too,” said the boy.
JoJo’s father told him to go to the Crystal Mountains and fetch sun gourds known for their bright colors.
The next morning, JoJo paddled his floater up the river toward the mountains.
“I sure hope it isn’t much farther, my arms are killing me,” muttered the boy.
At high sun, JoJo spotted the fields filled with bright orange sun gourds.
“I found them,” the boy cried.
After JoJo tied the craft to the bank, he selected half a dozen gourds and placed them into his basket.
“Now the fun part,” said the boy as he launched his floater downstream, catching a swift current.
Shortly after, the boy and his cargo arrived at his home.
“Mother, come see what I brought you for your Fifth of Po celebration,” cried JoJo.
Out came his mother and father to see what the hollering was all about.
“Sun gourds! JoJo, how on earth did you know I love these?” asked his mother.
“A little bird told me,” replied the boy with a wink toward his father.
JoJo danced with the village musicians. Letting himself flow to the rhythm of the beat.
“This is a magical celebration,” JoJo said. Then he went inside to dine with his family on this most special night.
