Starlight

“Papa, is it true that once every hundred years an angel comes to earth to spread starlight?” asked Meeshka.

“Meeshka, you are always asking the most troublesome questions,” her grandfather replied.

“I want to know about the angel. Is that trouble?” whimpered the child.

Her grandfather lowered his head in shame, then took a deep breath.

“I am sorry, I was wrong to scold you. The truth is not known for sure, but I believe it,” answered the grandfather.

“May you tell me what the angel looks like?” questioned Meeshka.

“Many say she is gold and has great wings. My father said he saw her when he was young. He told me she looks like a rabbit,” replied the man.

Meeshka asked a dozen more questions about the angel. Then her eyes grew heavy, and sleep came calling.

“Sleep and dream of Starlight. She is hope.” Papa said, “If you care for her, she will bloom into a lifetime of treasures.” Meeshka slipped into slumber.

After covering the child, the old man lit his pipe and walked outside. Staring up into the night sky, the grandfather spoke.

“When next you visit, please be sure to sprinkle a little of that stardust on the child. She will honor you tenfold for your troubles,” said the grandfather.

High above, a single star grew in brightness as to say, “I hear your request and will honor your wish.”

Papa gave a slight head nod to show that he had received the message. Then he finished his pipe and retired for the night.

High above, Starlight made plans to visit a little child whose dreams would change the world.
