“The scene is forever burned into my memory. The senseless insanity will haunt me until I turn to dust,” said the mountain troll.
“At the dawn of time, when Ymir brought forth the different races. There was one who terrified the rest. Man,” the troll spoke.
The giants scoffed at the creature’s puny size. They failed to recognize the danger posed by their numbers. The other races had strength and size. Man had its numbers.
“How could we, the great ones, ever have seen a threat? These specs ran around in circles,” muttered the troll.
Over millennia, the trolls, giants, goblins, and dwarves were driven from their homes.
“One day, a goblin was attacked and killed. The goblin was the king’s son, and vengeance was sought,” said the troll.
Through treaties, all the races agreed to stand against the vermin man. The dwarves drew the first lot, allowing them the honor of eliminating man.
The battle raged for days with neither side gaining an advantage. Out of nowhere, swarms of men poured over the hills. In a short time, defeat met the dwarves. Those not killed fled back into their mountain cave, never to be seen again.
“Next, the goblins tried their hand at victory, but again the result was the same. Goblins can not retreat, and so they were all wiped out,” spoke the troll.
With only two races left to oppose man, they decided to attack in unison to ensure man’s elimination.
“We believed we were invincible and, as such, our attacks were careless,” mumbled the troll.
Man saw that the giants relied on their strength. At the same time, the trolls used their claws and crushing teeth.
“Before we knew it, those puny things had us running into each other. It was only a matter of time before the dim-witted giants turned on us,” the troll said.
With the titans distracted, man picked off the weaker trolls.
“My family and I saw the madness and fled back to the mountains. As for the giants, they were defeated by tripping them. Once on the ground, the man swarms finished them off,” said the troll.
Hidden away in their mountain tunnels, the trolls wonder. They ponder how long before they, too, will follow the fate of the other titans.
“Insanity, utter madness,” remarked the troll. The titan then slipped into the cave’s darkness to live another day.
