Twisted Tales to Delight and Amaze

The Old Ways of Magic

Asrek sat near the river with his compass. “Please, oh please don’t move to the left,” pleads the little Gwelf.

When dark magic is near, the compass needle spins left to right. “Now you listen to me, compass. I want you to move to the right. Do you hear me?” said Asrek.

If it is the old magic from before the time of darkness, the needle will swing right to left.

“Why are you taking so long?” asked the Gwelf.

The needle moved to the right. It then went back to the left. After that, it moved to the right again. It was incapable of deciding which way to go.

“Blast this infernal contraption. I should throw you into the river and be done with your nonsense,” cried Asrek.

With his eyes fixed on the needle, the compass finally delivers its answer. Today it swings left to right.

“Mörken draws closer. I must tell the council about this,” muttered the little creature.

The Gwelf stands and scans the horizon. “How much time do we have? Ancient Ones, hear my plea. Come and stop him again,” Asrek cried.

Deep down, the Gwelf knew that the old magic would not come. This time, the fight was theirs. Asrek feared it would be the last for the Waldvolker.
