“The Ghast almost destroyed the borrow groves. As I extinguish one fireball, he would send another,” the gwelf told Fern.
“Damn that Mörken and his playmates. If it’s fire he wants, then the Troth better break out the sausages. Things are going to get hot real fast,” cried the Marsh Wizard.
“Fern, you know the Ghast can only stay in this plain until the next full moon, which is tomorrow night. Wouldn’t it be better to let it return rather than fight it?” asked her twin.
“Yes,” said Fern. “But since it’s bent on burning the forest down, I say let’s fight fire with fire. Let’s send that monster back to Hell where it belongs.”
The wise woman and the gwelf went ahead to warn the forest dwellers while the twins prepared for the attack.
“Izba and I will go to the far end of the grove. We’ll wait for you to drive the Ghast to us. When he crosses the standing stone circle, we’ll give him a fire blast he won’t forget,” said the Hedgewitch.
“I’ll create a vortex at the walking circle to ensnare him. If it doesn’t stop him in his tracks, it will at least weaken him. It will force him to your position,” Fern told Franny.
The sisters wish each other luck and then head to the forest.
“The moon is rising, so I’d better start,” Fern remarked.
The Marsh Wizard walked the stones, reciting an ancient charm. The charm would call the fire elementals. “That’s the ticket,” said Fern, who was now engulfed in flames.
“Send the winds to spin the flames. Drive this demon beast back to Hell where he belongs,” the Wizard said.
A giant glowing fireball emerged from her hand. The fire expanded into a swirling column of flames.
“Seek the Ghast, seek the demon. Fire to fire and ashes to ashes,” cried Fern.
The vortex spun as it moved toward the borrow grove where Franny and Izba waited.
“Now it’s up to you, sis. Give’em Hell!” muttered the Marsh Wizard.
Only time would tell if the twins’ plan worked. For now, Fern headed to help Ursala in evacuating the forest creatures.
