“Muzhichik, do you hear that rumble?” asked the dragon.
“A-ha, it could be a Troth scout or a merchant. They use a two-wheeled cart to move their supplies,” replied the troll.
“Should I go up and see?” asked Trillium.
“No! I don’t want anyone to know we are here,” commanded the troll.
The rummbling drew closer, then headed south along the river road.
“Merchant,” said Trillium.
Muzhichik nodded, then walked toward the road. The troll was not about to let the Troth sneak back to ambush the two guardians.
“I’ll go make sure,” remarked the troll.
Trillium dug in the dirt for a grub or larva. Dinner was late.
“Six more weeks and we’re free from this hole in the ground,” muttered the dragon.
“Come,” said Muzhichik.
Trillium jumped at Muzhichik’s command. “What? Is it the Troth?” questioned the dragon.
“No, it’s a wizard and a witch. It must be the twins. Why are they going south?” asked the troll.
“I know,” said the dragon as his eyes grew large.
“Go on, spit it out,” said Muzhichik.
“They’re heading to the Swamp of Despair to gather muck. The witch will use it to cast a spell over the Troth’s camp, causing them to waste away,” said Trillium.
“That’s great,” cried Muzhichik.
“No, the effect of the spell will spread and most likely come our way,” muttered the dragon.
“We’re doomed if we stay here, aren’t we?” questioned the troll.
“Most likely,” answered Trillium.
“Damned if we do, and damned if we don’t,” growled the troll.
“Muzhichik, we can’t leave this passage unguarded. If the Troth should stumble on it, they will use the Triquetra’s power to change time,” said Trillium.
“My thinking as well,” remarked the troll.
“We hope for the best. I’ll tell the council we’re staying. Until I return the Triquetra, it’s yours,” said the dragon who leapt into the air.
“Blast that Mörken and his vile Troth. I wish we could send the lot of them to Hell,” the troll muttered. He slipped into the passage’s shadows to wait for his friend’s return.
