Make A Wish

“Time to go, Trevor,” the young woman said.

Climbing onto her repus, Windom nudged the creature forward, and away they sped.

“Almost at the top now. I’ll walk from here,” said Windom as she dismounted the beast.

Windom allowed the repus to roam free as she made the short journey to the summit.

“Well, grandfather, I’m here as promised. Let’s get this over so I can get back to the business of living,” muttered Windom.

Windom reached into her pocket and pulled out a bit of folded cloth. “This is the last of it,” said the woman.

With the greatest of care, Windom unfolded the cloth. Inside lay a small pile of greyish dust. With a puff from her lungs, the dust flew into the morning breeze.

“You’re free now. No more dreams. I need my rest to keep things from falling apart,” said the woman.

Closing her eyes, Windom made a wish.

“Grandma says she misses you. Now off with you to the nine kingdoms,” the woman whispered.

Windom turned, grabbed the repus’s reins. “Be seeing you around, Gramps. Windom muttered.

“Who will set my ashes free when it’s my time?” the woman remarked. The repus snorted as if to say, “Don’t tempt fate.”

“Until then, let’s go get a drink at the Broken Arrow,” Windom told Trevor as she mounted the beast.

“So, Trev, what will it be today, cider or ale?” asked the woman.

Trevor didn’t care. He was glad to be coming down from the cold mountain.

“Ale it is,” said Windom with a wry smile.
