Twisted Tales to Delight and Amaze

Zen of the Apocalypse

Zen of the Apocalypse

The man knew it was coming. Nos felt it in his bones.

“Well, best get packing. It’s a bit of a hike to the summit,” said Nos. He gathered his prayer rug and headed out the door.

Nos took the 512 to the rail station, then bought a one-way ticket. “Off on holiday?” asked the saleswoman.

“No, the apocalypse is coming. I want to relax on the summit before I’m vaporized,” replied Nos.

“You have a lovely time then and don’t forget the last train down leaves at nine,” the woman said.

Nos took his ticket, nodded, then walked to the platform.

On the way up, the hair on his arms stood straight up. Nos checked to see if the other passengers were experiencing the same thing. They were oblivious to what was happening with their noses stuck to their phone screens.

“Won’t be long now,” Nos muttered.

“What won’t be long, dear?” asked a kindly old woman next to him.

“The apocalypse. The world is ending today,” answered the man with a smile.

“Lovely day for it,” replied the woman who returned to scrolling on her phone.

When Nos got off at the last stop, he noticed that there was no bird song. “Better seek cover. Soon enough, it will all be yours again,” said the man as he headed up the trail.

The sun began its downward slide as the man climbed the steep path. “Not long now,” said Nos.

At the summit, Nos rolled out the rug and sat down. Placing a flower he had picked on the way at his feet, Nos began to meditate.

“I am the Earth and the Earth is me,” Nos began to chant.

At forty-two minutes past the hour, Nos achieved enlightenment. Shortly after, he turned into atoms.

The rest of the world was not in tune with the planet. Humanity suffered the horrors of the apocalypse before finally turning to dust.

As Nos had predicted. Once humans were gone, the birds again filled the skies. They sang lovely songs for the Earth to enjoy, as in days of old.
