“When I was little, Nana gave me the gift of the Caim,” Maura told her sister.
“I don’t understand. What is a Caim?” asked Gauta.
“Sanctuary,” answered her elder.
“You mean like a holy place, that sanctuary?” questioned the younger.
“Well, not exactly. Caim is an invisible circle of protection you form with the hand. It reminds one of being safe and loved, even in dark times,” explained Maura.
“Oh, one of Nana’s magic charms. I miss her. She always made things seem bright no matter how bad they got,” remarked Gauta.
Maura showed her sister how to use the Caim, explaining that protection was there to help you.
“Will we go to the dark place today?” asked the younger sibling.
“I’m afraid we must. Theud is bringing four escapees from the ogre camps. It will be our job to bring them here before nightfall,” said Maura.
“I will use the Caim this time. I’m sure Nana’s magic will protect us,” remarked Gauta.
“I’m sure it will, too,” said Maura.
As the sisters cross the barrier line into the dead zone, Gauta uses the Caim, which eases her fears.
At the midpoint of their journey, the sisters heard the sound of heavy marching feet. “Gauta, hide! It’s Goblins,” whispered her sister.
As the patrol marched past, the two held each other, fearing to breathe. Gauta remembered Nana’s charm and, with her free hand, made the Caim around her and Maura.
Time seemed to stand still while the sisters felt embraced in an envelope of love. The moment passed, and the goblin patrol was gone.
“Nana was right. The Caim protects you with love,” said Gauta with a huge smile.
Hurrying down the path, they exited the dark place and met Theud and his charges. “Here they are, girls. Get them back to the sanctuary,” instructed the guide.
“Not to worry, Theud,” said Maura. She held a bedraggled survivor’s hand and led her back through the wood.
When they reached their home, they cleaned and fed the women. Later, Guata taught the women Nana’s Caim charm, allowing them to heal while surrounded by love.
“Thank you, Nana, wherever you may be,” whispered Guata as she closed her eyes to get much-needed rest.
