“You there, Tommy Barns. Why are you sulking about?” demanded the Librarian.
“Excuse me, Miss Crabtree. I was hoping you could help me with my school report,” murmured the boy.
“Speak up, child. A school report, you say? Perhaps if the topic interests me,” replied the woman.
“Our class is studying distant lands, and I wish to know more about Bali. You see, I’ve heard that demons walk the island,” said Tommy.
“Demons and people possessed move in straight lines. Not in curves like normal human beings,” answered Miss Craptree.
“I’m sorry, did you say people possessed?” inquired the boy.
“Yes, when a demon enters a person, they take over the soul. Only after the demon is cast out does that person stop walking in straight lines,” remarked the woman.
“You seem to know quite a lot about this subject,” remarked Tommy.
“I spent time in Bali working as a nanny,” answered the Librarian.
The boy wrote down everything the Librarian had told him. He thanked the woman for her help and was about to leave when Miss Craptree spoke.
“We have several books on Bali. Would you like me to fetch them for you?” Miss Craptree asked.
“Yes, please, if it’s not a bother,” replied the boy.
The Librarian stood and headed toward the shelved books. Tommy Barns noticed that the Librarian walked in straight lines. Not in curves as normal people do.
“I’d better head home and forget about those books for now,” Tommy said as he dashed out the door.
