A Quiet Place

If you are lucky enough, you might find an ancient Pict sanctuary hidden in the forest of Doun. The stones lay undisturbed for thousands of years, except for the occasional explorer.

During Victoria’s reign, the local Folk Preservation Society erected a wrought iron fence to protect the site from vandalism. Once a decade, its members hike into the wood and remove weeds and other debris that has collected over time.

It is a quiet place that echoes memories of long ago. Many believe it is a lonely place, but unbeknownst to them, a visitor regularly brings the past to the present and, in doing so, renews the ghosts of those who once worshipped there.

The last wood witch has traveled vast distances for thousands of years to honor fallen friends. She carries the memories of the builders and worshippers who cherished the stone altar and its standing stones.

Now, she is the only one; in time, she shall fade into the earth like those before her. When that happens, the ghosts of the past will be gone.

So, if you are lucky enough to find the sanctuary hidden in the forest of Doun, stop and pray to its builders and those who bent their knees and offered libations.

One never knows what lies on the other side. You may find new works surrounded by dancing and music on full moon nights, as they were here long ago.
