“What price a King must pay for the weight of his crown,” said the old King.
King Jukka sat above the coffin of his friend, Wizard Henrik. “You who have listened to my secrets offered me wisdom and shared a drink when I was down. You, too, will be food for the worms,” said the King.
After an invader killed Jukka’s father, Henrik was there to counsel the fledgling King.
“I am an old fool, but my wisdom is yours,” the wizard told the young King. Over the years, the King and his mentor became inseparable.
As wars spread across the land, King Jukka’s forces would decide the battle’s outcome. Swarming to prevent the invading archers from seeing the defenders until too late.
“Though gold it be, this crown I wear feels like a stone that drags you deep into dark waters. I would give it to another to have you back, my friend,” murmured the King.
King Jukka sat, listening to the wind.
“Duty calls my friend. Sleep in peace and forget your fears. I have placed Charon’s fee upon your eyes so you will not wander until eternity,” remarked the King.
The King took flight, crying, “Caw, Caw, beware all who encroach upon our sacred isle. Black death comes from the skies, leaving you to die alone in the fields of Avalon.”
The King knew his time would come. On that day, he would meet Henrik in the sunless lands. Together, they would raise a toast to victory and Avalon.
