If you walk long enough in the Folksburywoods, you’ll come to a small lake.
In its center is an old, overgrown Dafula tree, which is the home of Wekum.
Wekum is a hedgewitch who takes her solitude seriously. To be clear, the witch is as kind and gentle as they come. She avoids company if she can.
Wekum was orphaned as a baby. She was raised by a childless troll who loved and cared for her.
The troll mother taught Wekum the secret ways of troll magic and showed her how to cure the sick with herbs and roots.
Once Wekum became an adult, her troll mother said her goodbyes. She realized it was improper for a troll and a human to be family.
Wekum’s heart broke, and to this day, tears fall whenever the witch thinks of her mother. “Why must humans be so cold to those with whom we share this earth?” muttered Wekum.
The young woman moved to Folksburywoods and settled in a Dufula tree on a remote island.
Her skill at curing man and beast alike brought her enough silver to fill her belly and then some. In time, she stopped going to the town to treat folks.
Drawing a forest curtain around her, Wekum disappeared into the wood’s oldest part.
Villagers will walk the distance when sleep eludes them or when an ache can’t be fixed with an ounce of good cheer. Wekum knows the ways of the trolls and can fix anything.
Wekum’s days are spent gliding about the lake or sipping dewberry tea. Wekum likes her solitude, and the people of Folksburywoods leave her alone.
Someday, she may decide to join the rest of us. Until then, Wekum has her tree and lake. These keep her mind from wandering to the past when her mother loved her and then left.
