“Tomorrow is Samhain,” said Gerald.

“The excitement is killing me,” remarked Veronica.

“Will you be wearing your leeches, Samantha?” asked Randel.

“I don’t care about your silly holiday. You three get up in branches about a ceremony you’re not even invited to,” said Samantha.

“There she goes ruining it for everyone. Every year it’s the same. Don’t know why we bother trying to be nice,” said Veronica.

For as long as anyone can remember, the four guardians of the circle have fought over the celebration of Samhain.

“At least she’s honest,” muttered Randel. “Unlike someone who thinks he got away with stealing last year’s blood punch for themselves.”

“How dare you suggest that I was involved in Witch Hazel tripping? How could I have anything to do with dumping the punch at my roots?” cried Gerald.

“If the bowl fits, wear it,” mocked Samantha.

The witches were aware of this family feud but felt it best if they remained detached. “We would not want to become entangled in the family’s affairs,” said Witch Holly.

“If I weren’t stuck here, I’d leave you trolls and find somewhere where I was appreciated,” said Randel.

“The only thing you’d be appreciated for is firewood, you dried-up old codger,” said Veronica.

“Look who’s talking. If Hootie doesn’t bring you that snake oil daily, you’d dry up and blow away,” said Samantha.

“Take that back, you foul-mouthed bundle of twigs,” cried Veronica.

So it went all night long. As the dawn shone, the four ceased their bickering, closed their eyes, and slept.

When they awoke to the sights and sounds of the celebration, all would be forgiven for another year.

“Some traditions are worth keeping. Others you’re not sure about,” said Witch Hazel, referring to the annual family feud.

“Next year may be different. Then again, it might not,” say the witches about the guardians.
