“Tyre, you ever wonder what life is like outside the forest?” asked Bobby.
“Can’t say as I ever did. Why are you thinking about such things? Miss Daisy says that sort of thing will land you in trouble,” replied his friend.
Bobby and Tyre had been best friends as long as they could remember, and nothing was going to change that.
“I was over near Mr. Jones’ farm when he spoke with a stranger. They talked about some hubbub happening on the other side of the mountain,” said Tyre.
“The only thing that’s going to happen is that we won’t get paid if we don’t finish work. Resting time is over, let’s get to it,” barked Bobby.
The friends rose and walked to the nearby field to finish their daily duties. Later, while having supper, Tyre brought up the question of the outside world again.
“I want to see outside, Bobby, let’s take some money and go see the great big world,” said Tyre.
“For the last time, no. Finish your supper, and let’s go fishing down at the river,” replied Bobby.
Tyre wasn’t hungry but ate his beans anyway. The two friends walked to the river and spent the night fishing for catfish. Tyre didn’t talk much.
The following morning, Bobby found Tyre’s things gone. A note on the table said he had gone to see the great big world.
“Dang fool get himself killed,” is all Booby said.
“Some things are more important than being best friends for life,” Tyre told himself as he headed into the great big world.
