“Gee whizzers, Charlotte, that was the best Halloween yet,” said the Ghost.
“Yeah, I guess,” the rag doll replied.
The two had spooked all night and were now headed home.
“You seem to have the bloopity blues. Why don’t we stop into Ralph’s for a Muck Moca?” asked her friend.
“Sure, why not,” answered the doll.
They sat sipping their drinks in silence. Then Charlotte turned and asked if the Ghost thought something had changed this year.
“Well, now that you mention it. I noticed there weren’t many sweets, and too many flashing lights,” replied her friend.
“No, I don’t mean the decorations or the candy. I’m talking about the kids,” said Charlotte.
“Oh, I see,” said the Ghost.
“Do you remember when we would pop out from under a bed? The screams could shatter a window. This year they barely jumped,” remarked the rag doll.
“Yeah, now that you mention it, I thought that was weird too,” the Ghost said.
The two finished their drinks and headed home.
“I’ll see you later, Charlotte,” the Ghost said as he turned into his haunted house.
“Sure, see you later,” said Charlotte, and gave a half-hearted wave.
As the doll continued, she reflected on the following night’s activities.
“Things have changed,” said the doll as she stepped into the shack.
‘Next year things will be better,” Charlotte whispered as she lay down.
“Yeah, like old times,” the doll said, then drifted off to sleep.
